The Best Bookstore in the World is in Santorini Island, Greece

Who could imagine that one of the world's best bookstore's is on an island in the middle of the Aegean Sea.

BEST BOOKSTORE OF THE WORLD IS IN SANTORINI ISLAND

A Mediterranean Dream Realized

The story began in 2002, when two university students, Craig Walzer and Oliver Wise, spent a week in Oia. They realized the village lacked a bookshop, —and in the way only idealistic youths can—decided they would be the ones to build it.

They returned two years later with a group of friends from Cyprus and England, a van full of books, and a collective dream. They found an old Captain’s house a traditional Santorini “cave house” and transformed it into a literary labyrinth.

The Aesthetic: Where Literature Meets the Aegean

Tucked into the whitewashed cliffs of Oia, the shop is a masterclass in atmospheric design.

  • The Interior: Floor-to-ceiling wooden bookshelves are crammed with everything from philosophy to modern fiction. Hand-painted quotes and timelines of world literature crawl across the walls and ceilings.

  • The Terrace: Perhaps the shop’s most famous feature, the rooftop terrace offers a panoramic view of the Santorini caldera. It is here that the shop truly breathes, acting as a communal space for travelers to pause.

  • The Inventory: Beyond the latest bestsellers, Atlantis is known for its curated collection of rare books and first editions, including aged copies of Greek classics that feel right at home in the Mediterranean air.

A Cultural Hub (Not Just a Shop)

The founders didn’t want a static retail space; they wanted a living, breathing community. Over the years, Atlantis has become the heart of Oia’s cultural life through:

  • The Paravion Press: The shop actually houses its own small printing press, producing beautiful, hand-bound pamphlets and short stories.

  • Events: From the “Caldera Arts Festival” to intimate sunset readings and outdoor film screenings, the shop bridges the gap between the local community and the rotating door of international tourists.

  • The “Librarian” Experience: In its early years, the staff famously lived in the back of the shop, creating a bohemian, communal atmosphere that persists to this day.

Why National Geographic Ranked it #1

When National Geographic crowned it the best bookstore in the world, they weren’t just looking at sales figures. They were highlighting the romance of the physical book in a digital age.

Atlantis Books represents the idea that a bookstore can be a destination in itself—a place where the smell of old paper mixes with salt air, and where the act of browsing feels like a discovery rather than a transaction.
